Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a healthcare model that puts patients first by removing the red tape and insurance hassles that often come with traditional medical practices.
Instead of billing through insurance, patients pay their doctor directly—usually through a simple monthly membership fee. This allows for longer visits, easier access to care, and a stronger doctor-patient relationship.

While the terms concierge medicine and Direct Primary Care (DPC) are sometimes used interchangeably, DPC has its own distinct focus and philosophy. At its core, DPC is about putting the patient first—offering care when it’s needed, taking the time to truly listen, and creating personalized, proactive health plans.
In the DPC model, the doctor-patient relationship is exactly what the name implies: direct. DPC practices typically don’t bill insurance; instead, patients pay their doctor directly through an affordable membership. This approach allows for transparent pricing, wholesale lab costs, discounted prescriptions, and meaningful savings—all while strengthening the connection between doctor and patient.

No—and that’s intentional. By removing insurance companies from the equation, we preserve the direct, personal relationship between you and your doctor. This freedom allows us to focus entirely on your care, not on paperwork or third-party rules. It also lets us offer transparent pricing, wholesale lab costs, and discounted medications—real savings with no hidden barriers.

Yes. We recommend maintaining a major medical plan with a high deductible and a Health Savings Account (HSA) to provide financial protection in case of hospitalization, specialty care, or other unexpected medical expenses.

Yes. You’ll just need to sign a one-time waiver stating that neither you nor your doctor will bill Medicare for services provided at our office. Medicare will still cover any lab work, imaging, medications, or hospitalizations ordered by your Lumina Health provider.

Unfortunately, no. Membership fees are generally not considered a deductible medical expense in most states. We recommend consulting your tax advisor to understand how this applies to your specific situation.

Our goal is to provide exceptional care and access to help prevent or minimize hospitalizations and specialist visits. If hospitalization or specialty care is needed, we will work closely with your hospitalist and any specialists to coordinate your treatment.
In certain cases, specialized providers may take the lead in managing your care, while we continue to oversee and support your overall health.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) are governed by your employer’s plan, and each plan defines which expenses are eligible. Membership fees for direct primary care practices like Lumina Health are not automatically covered under most FSA plans. To confirm whether your FSA allows payment for membership or services, please check with your employer or FSA plan administrator.

If your employer’s insurance plan requires you to select an in‐network PCP, you can still join Lumina Health DPC. Our membership operates independently of insurance, so it does not interfere with your insurance requirements. Lumina Health provides transparent, all-inclusive care directly to you, while your in-network PCP coverage can remain in place for insurance purposes. Many patients use both simultaneously: your insurance for coverage requirements and Lumina Health for accessible, personalized care. Important: Always check with your employer or HR to ensure you remain in compliance with your insurance plan’s PCP requirements.

Yes. Beginning January 1, 2026, Health Savings Account (HSA) funds can legally be used to pay for Direct Primary Care (DPC) memberships under new federal law. This change also means you can continue contributing to your HSA while enrolled in a qualifying DPC membership.
To qualify, the DPC arrangement must cover only primary care services provided by a licensed practitioner and be paid through a fixed monthly fee rather than a per-visit charge. Membership fees must remain below $150 per month for an individual or $300 per month for a family (amounts will adjust annually for inflation).
Using your HSA for DPC is especially beneficial because HSAs offer a triple tax advantage — contributions are tax-deductible, funds grow tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are also tax-free. Paired with a high-deductible health plan (HDHP), this structure allows patients to save on taxes while accessing affordable, high-quality primary care through Lumina Health DPC.
Note: Always verify eligibility with your HSA provider or tax professional to ensure your specific plan meets the new requirements.
